As we left the restaurant after lunch, we were surprised when the guide took a different route. Since the tour was over, we thought we would head back to our cars. For whatever reason, the guide led us in a completely different direction, on a paved road in Flamingo. Brooke was in front of me and George had Paige with him, bringing up the rear. The guide who was supposed to be at the end of the line was gone. He had left our group, something he did often throughout the tour.

As we neared the bottom of a steep hill, Brooke stopped. Initially, I thought something was wrong with her ATV, but she said it was fine, and then accelerated ahead of me. We all climbed the steep road.

We could not see the guide in front, so we rushed to catch up. Trailing farther and farther behind him, we sped along the road with no warning signs to alert us of danger, or guardrails to protect us from what lurked below. We had no idea that the narrow road ran less than a few feet from the edge of a sheer cliff. Unaware, we drove on beside the 260-foot drop.

It is inevitable we will all suffer loss in our lives. Whether it is the loss of a relationship, a job, a pet, or a loved one, most find it upsetting and painful. We all deal with the hurting or grief—differently. I am not ashamed to share my journey and fight for survival after the tragic death of my daughter. I do wish to offer hope and encouragement so that others will see that they, too, can survive life’s most difficult challenges. Enduring this terrible loss has led me to look at my life more closely and has helped me to understand its true meaning and purpose. We have to believe and we must have faith, knowing with confidence that our lives are eternal, and our loved ones truly never leave us. We are stronger than we realize or ever deemed possible. I have found that it is in the midst of the hardest times that I turn to God to find peace. It is unlikely that if everything were perfect, we would feel the need to seek God in our lives. It is through these difficult times that we grow spiritually, furthering us on the path of our life journey.
